Just In Time for Mother’s Day…REAL Help for Parents of Newborns

(PRWEB) April 26, 2002

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA: It’s so easy to get overwhelmed as a parent of a newborn…and amid the chaos and confusion, the thought of plowing through whole shelves of parenting books to find the right advice is more than many new parents can handle.

The solution: A “Reader’s Digest” of great parenting tips, in easy nuggets, compiled from a wide array of authoritative sources…and organized into a quick paragraph or two per day, for the first 24 weeks of life. Baby Be Loved: Growing and Learning Together During the First 24 Weeks offers exercises, songs, activities, even suggestions for decoration.

Filled with easy, free or very cheap activities, each tied to the appropriate developmental stage day by day and week by week, the book emphasizes the ways a loving, active environment can increase babies’ physical, social, intellectual, and emotional development.

Each week’s suggestions fit on a page, and the entire book can be hung like a calendar, so that the week’s activities are right there in plain sight. (See enclosed sample page.) Each week also offers a full-page, developmentally appropriate piece of art by Joel Dugan

The book (ISBN 0-9705242-0-X, $ 24.95), was created by Susan Ann Stelfox out of her own frustration at not finding a one-stop source for advice during those first precious, vital weeks—when she became a first-time new mom at age 40. Stelfox, a breast cancer survivor, had built prodigious research skills in her quest for information about her disease, and used those skills to absorb and organize everything she could find about new-baby development. She read such experts as Dr. Penelope Leach and Dr. Marilyn Segal, and rewrote their best tips into one-paragraph “bonbons” that are easy to digest—and easy for even a harried new mom to put into practice. All the information was vetted by pediatrician Nancy Iverson, M.D.

“Filled with daily parent-child activities, from songs and exercises to special illustrations, to help stimulate a new baby’s senses and development for the first twenty-four weeks… excellent and highly recommended.”

“Spring into Shape” Before Summer — Sugar-free Foods and Beverages Can Help With Spring and Summer Weight Loss Efforts

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 21, 2008

With the flowers finally in bloom and America’s favorite baseball teams back at bat, spring has officially begun. And that means swimsuit season is just around the corner.

To prepare for the return to a skimpier wardrobe, some people may turn to weight loss pills and the drastic elimination of certain foods and beverages to quickly cure their weight woes. This spring, however, instead of eyeing the latest fad diet, try a more sensible approach by utilizing sugar-free foods and beverages.

Products sweetened with sucralose allow consumers to enjoy their favorite meals without worrying about the additional calories. For example, drinking a diet soda can save 150 calories. Over the course of a year, that daily calorie savings could result in a 15-pound weight loss.

“By making simple diet substitutions, consumers are able to slim down without sacrificing their favorite foods and beverages,” says Beth Hubrich, a registered dietitian with the Calorie Control Council. “Sucralose and other low-calorie sweeteners can aid in weight loss efforts. Of course, portion control and regular exercise are also crucial to a healthy lifestyle.”

According to a 2007 national survey conducted by the Calorie Control Council, 194 million U.S. adults enjoy low-calorie foods and beverages. The top reasons cited for the light product use include maintaining better overall health, calorie reduction and eating or drinking healthier foods and beverages.

This year, don’t let swimsuit season be your worst nightmare. Start incorporating sucralose into your favorite recipes now in order to flaunt a healthier new you by summer.

Here are two recipes utilizing the low-calorie sweetener Splenda. For additional information or recipes, check out http://www.sucralose.org or http://www.splenda.com.

By Rachel Hayon, MPH

“He’s not looking too well.”

“How bad is it??”

“Jules…Dad, he’s, he’s gonna die. I just know it. He’s not opening his eyes anymore, or moving…Mom’s a mess please come home.”

“I’ll be home soon Shorty, as soon as I can get a plane ticket….”

Such was the news I received on my-present-to-myself graduation trip. I was overseas, away from my family about one month when my father fell ill. He had a stroke and in the end, he went into cardiac arrest. Just like that he was gone. I hadn’t planned on that happening, I mean, I suppose no one ever PLANS these things, but you know what I mean, it’s always a shock. He was overweight, out of shape and his overall physical state was not good, but I suppose its human nature to hope against hope that your loved ones will overcome all odds and be with you forever. Unfortunately, reality often steps in and you realize that things don’t always work out the way you’ve planned them. Too bad, but as my father might have said in his native tongue “C’est la vie”

I came home to a totally changed reality. Just goes to show the old proverb “Man plans, G-d laughs” has more truth to it than we ever want to admit. For instance, I had planned to start a PhD program. I was going to be a psychologist, open up my own practice and live happily ever after. This new predicament nipped that course of action in the bud. Why? One main reason- money.

You see, my father was a smart man. He spoke six languages and traveled the majority of the world in his life time. He was an immigrant, as is my mother and they were here to capture the American dream. Despite all of his good intentions and his vast intellect, he died, with no money to his name. Not that life is all about money, of course it isn’t, I would never suggest such a thing. But, as those of you out there who have ever been in a financial bind know, having money sure does lower your over all stress level.

I figured out at an early age how high stress levels correlate with a low money reserve as I saw my parents struggle, time and time again. In fact, I think my father’s health deteriorated so quickly because of his high stress levels. They struggled both because of a lack of formal education and poor business decisions and of course that unavoidable con-artist who WILL approach those individuals who most want to get ahead in life. That’s what happened to my father. Time and time again he tried to get ahead, looked into new businesses, worked his fingers to the bone, and trusted the wrong people. The end result: breaking even if you’re lucky.

Speaking of being lucky, I decided that is exactly what I would be. I was going to stop the cycle my parent’s had started, get a formal education, go to graduate school and be livin’ large. Well, at least larger than they had. See, I never wanted wealth; all I wanted was to be comfortable, have a gratifying career in which I could help other people and be able to pay the bills. Being that neither of my parents are college educated, I had to figure out the university system on my own. Let me tell ya, there are lots of twists and turns, not to mention hidden entry ways, no one tells you about on that path. Regardless, after doing lots of things I shouldn’t have done and not doing things I Should have done, I was able to get myself into a reputable college, got a scholarship, and even got myself into graduate school. Sounds good right? Well, it was, until the unexpected happened.

I’m not trying to imply that my situation is helpless, I do after all possess a college degree and I will plow my way ahead. However, I now have to think of my mother and brother’s well being and cannot concentrate solely on the career I had planned on. Some good has come from my father’s death and my college experience. For instance, seeing the mistakes he made is helping me to reevaluate my choices and my life. I am also happy to report that my experiences having given me the knowledge to guide my little brother past the potholes I fell into. I’m happy to say, he is now a junior in college and doing great.

So what’s the moral of the story?? First, know that in an instant your life can change and be prepared. Second, take Every opportunity to can get. See, my Dad was right, we do live in the United States and this is a land with much opportunity. The only problem is, though the information is out there, most parents (especially from other countries) don’t know how to guide their children to the better future they so want them to possess. For instance, did you know that high school level children can start earning college credit while simultaneously earning their high school diploma?? No, you didn’t know that? Well, neither did I. That’s why I’m passing on the information. Because I want to make sure other people’s children don’t miss what I did. A word to the wise- the earlier you start building your future, the better.

Based on a true story.

From the Villages of India to the Suburbs of America – the Book that Can Help Millions to Read

Mountain View, CA (PRWEB) April 20, 2005

If your idea of learning a new language means plowing through endless stacks of cassette tapes, think again. Thanks to BookBox, the innovative brainchild of a team of Stanford University students, a language- learning revolution is about to begin.

In a nutshell, BookBox is a digital “jukebox” of animated books, each available in multiple languages ranging from Spanish and French to Hindi and Chinese. Based on the science of Same Language Subtitling (SLS), BookBox synchronizes the text, audio, and visual media so that your 4 year-old child can now read a story on his own — simply by listening to the narration and following it word by word in the subtitles. Or if your child wants to learn Spanish, she can simply turn on English and Spanish subtitles, and listen to a Spanish audio narration.

You get the idea: http://www.bookbox.com

Non-English speakers in the US, especially young children, will find BookBox particularly useful as a language-learning tool. With its beautiful illustrations, dynamic animation and colorful narration, BookBox essentially turns a regular storybook into an educational cartoon that kids can “watch.”

At the same time, Bookbox is very much a global product, where children from all over the world can learn to read, in any language they want.

The BookBox innovation comes at a particularly propitious time, when globalization is the new buzzword and multilingualism can be worth more than a college degree.

Yet the beauty of BookBox lies not just in its multi-lingual interface, but in its simple ability to make reading truly universal, in a way never before experienced.

It gives rise to a reading revolution, where the illiterate who have traditionally been helpless with books, can now proudly carry one in hand and be able to read it – on their own.

“The educational problem of the world is not that we don’t have enough top-notch scientists and engineers, it’s that we have over a billion people who cannot read the headline of a newspaper,” says Brij Kothari, BookBox co-founder.

Armed with the brilliantly simple idea of subtitling animated books, Brij rounded up a team of Stanford University undergraduates in early 2004 to help develop BookBox.

It has only been a year, but BookBox has come a long way. Currently BookBox is available online at http://www.bookbox.com , and all of its 6 original stories can be downloaded for free . In the future, BookBox stories will also be released in DVD, mp3 formats, and even TV!

Within the 3-month launch of its young website, BookBox has already generated a buzz with users around the globe. As one BookBoxer describes: “Finally, a book without boundaries – from the language enthusiast in France to the illiterate peasant in China. BookBox is truly universal.”

Tonsillitis Tips Help Parents Prepare Their Children for Surgery with Less Anxiety

Long Island, NY (PRWEB) February 9, 2009

A tonsillectomy is quite often a child’s first surgery, and it can be a frightening one. But never fear, Dr. Laurie Zelinger is here to help with her new book “The “O, MY” in Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy: How to Prepare Your Child for Surgery, a Parent’s Manual” (ISBN 9781932690743, Loving Healing Press, 2009).

When her son, Jordan, needed a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, Dr. Laurie Zelinger wished she had a book to prepare for the surgery. She took copious notes and did thorough research to make sure her son’s surgery and recovery would be as pain-free as possible. Now she has used her experiences to write a full-color guidebook for other parents to help their children prepare for this potentially frightening experience.

Recommendation: Help Fight Global Warming by Increasing Soil?s Organic Matter

Albuquerque, NM (PRWEB) September 5, 2006

We can begin counteracting the effects of global warming if farmers and ranchers build up ?the organic content of their farmlands,? says Texas agricultural consultant Malcolm Beck. They can do so by using animal grazing techniques developed 25 years ago by the Albuquerque, New Mexico-based non-profit, Holistic Management International (HMI).

Now being used on more than one million acres of land in the U.S., HMI?s methods conserve and enhance the soil?s organic content ?in almost any weather condition.?

Beck made these observations in the June issue of Stockman Grassfarmer magazine.

Beck noted that global warming has occurred because the earth?s atmosphere is overloaded with huge amounts of Carbon Dioxide (CO2), released into the air by burning fossil fuels. Plants normally and naturally absorb CO2, but modern agricultural practices and worldwide deforestation have severely reduced their ability to do so.

Before modern agricultural methods were introduced, ?it is estimated that the organic content of the soil in this country was between 4 and 8 percent,? says HMI?s Executive Director, Shannon Horst. However, after we adopted excessive plowing, non-organic fertilizers and continuous grazing, ?the organic content of soil fell significantly, in some estimations by at least 50%.?

Horst points out that grazing planning and management practices taught by HMI would help offset the effects of global warming because they focuses on keeping the soil covered and providing grasses with enough time to recover from animal grazing. These practices have also been proven to reduce uses of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and large equipment that consumes fossil fuels.

When a protective cover remains over the soil, the soil?s ability to trap moisture goes up, and this increases the microbial action essential to carbon sequestration. Erosion is reduced, plant roots absorb more water, flood damage is lessened, and healthy habitats are created that increase the diversity of native plant and wildlife species.

?In addition to all of these benefits,? Horst says, ?ranchers using Holistic Management almost always have higher stocking rates and make more profit each year.?

HMI is offering farmers and ranchers an introductory weekend workshop in Albuquerque November 3-5, and a yearlong ?Range and Ranch Management Training Program? for farmers and ranchers beginning September 16. More information is available from Ann Adams at HMI, (505) 842-5252.

Tips for Beach Babies: Help Kids Stay Safe by the Sea

Fort Worth, Texas (Vocus) June 3, 2010

Sunshine. Seashores. Sandcastles. These words may conjure up the perfect summer vacation in your mind. Add a small child to the picture, and you may be worried that your time in the sun will be anything but relaxing. Not so, says, Heather McGehearty of Babysafetravel.com. ?Like most family travel,? she says, “A bit of planning can ensure safe fun in the sun for the whole family.?

McGehearty suggests that planning for a beach trip starts with packing. Her must-have items include:

Sunscreen: Children?s delicate skin can burn in as little as ten minutes without protection. Water and sand reflect UV rays, making the need for sunscreen even greater. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that all children ? regardless of their skin tone ? wear sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.
Water: Don?t assume you?ll be able to find good drinkable water at the beach. Carry it yourself and save a few dollars. Even better, carry filtered tap water and save the environmental cost of producing bottled water. Keep your kids hydrated by making sure they drink every hour or so.
Towels and Blankets: Stash a few extra towels in case some get wet or sandy, and a blanket to stretch out on. A Tuffo water-resistant blanket can keep the family dry, even on wet sand.
Sunglasses: Look for glasses whose lenses offer 100% UVA and UVB protection, and are comfortable enough that kids will keep them on.
Sun Hats and T-shirts:In Australia, they say ?Slip, slop, slap.? Slip on a t-shirt, slop on the sunscreen, and slap on a hat. By keeping your kids protected from the sun, you?ll ensure them a more comfortable time now, and a reduced risk of skin cancer later.

Once you?re at the shore, plan to be especially vigilant when your children are around water. Don?t let them swim in areas without a life guard, and make sure to teach older children how to fight undertows (by swimming parallel to the shore). If you?re? going to a remote area, check the tides, and be especially careful around logs, and cliffs.

Watch out for jellyfish and other stinging animals. If your child is stung, call a lifeguard for help. If you?re on your own, don?t rub the area or rinse it with fresh water or tap water. Instead, use vinegar or seawater to rinse the affected body part, and scrape or shave the areas (without touching the area with your hands) gently to remove any remaining stingers. Over-the-counter pain relievers and ice can ease the discomfort, and antihistamines such as Benadryl can relieve itching and swelling. If symptoms are severe, or if signs of anaphylactic reaction are present, seek medical help immediately.

And last but not least, plan to go to a beach that is safe for your whole family. ?What?s going on right now in the Gulf has brought the safety of the actual water into the spotlight,? Say Babysafe.com?s McGehearty. To find out about pollution and health conditions at beaches all over the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Office of Water has established Beach Watch at epa.gov/OST/beaches/.

?Just a little preparation,? says McGehearty, ?Can make the difference between a potentially disastrous vacation, and one you?ll treasure for years.?
